Chenango spared Tuesday’s deadly upstate thunderstorms
CHENANGO COUNTY – Severe thunderstorms that knocked out power to thousands and caused at least one death Tuesday in northern upstate New York bypassed most of Chenango County.
The storms knocked over trees, brought down power lines and damaged homes in an area stretching from Oswego on the eastern end of Lake Ontario to the Vermont border, according to The Associated Press.
Fortunately they missed most of Chenango County, said county Fire Coordinator Matt Beckwith, with minimal damage reported yesterday afternoon in the county’s southern end.
“There were a few trees and wires down in the Afton and Bainbridge area,” Beckwith said. “Overall, we were pretty fortunate. The storms for the most part ended up going to the north or south of the county.”
No accidents or injuries were reported locally as a result of the storms, Beckwith confirmed.
Tuesday evening 32-mile-per-hour high winds brought down several trees and cut power in a section of the City of Norwich, according to the city’s Emergency Management Officer A. Wesley Jones.
“There was a brown-out that affected five or six streets on the city’s north side near the Chenango Memorial Hospital,” said Jones.
Total precipitation Tuesday was only two-tenths of an inch, Jones said.
The National Weather Service in Binghamton issued a tornado watch and severe thunderstorm warning yesterday for Chenango, with similar warnings also put into effect for 15 other counties in Central New York and the Southern Tier.
More than 35,000 utility customers were still without power this morning in the northern part of the state.
Authorities in Lewis County say a 47-year-old logger was killed when high winds toppled trees that struck him from behind.
A no unnecessary travel advisory was also issued in St. Lawrence County because of storm damage.
