Safe Summer Fun Day Friday

NORWICH – The school year is coming to a close and that means summer is here. Now that children will be having more free time, it is important to remind them to have fun in a safe way. The perfect way to accomplish this is to attend the annual Safe Summer Fun Day Friday hosted by the Place and Chenango County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services.
Safe Summer Fun Day will be held between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. June 13 in Kurt Beyer park. “It will be a really good event. Everyone should come down and spend time with their families,” said Mark Parsons, who along with Annika Pettit, co-chairs the event. This will be their second year working with Heidi Foster from The Place.
The event began as an annual bike rodeo to teach children safe bike practices. Now it has evolved into a family-oriented festival sponsored by approximately 30 local businesses and organizations. This year’s bike rodeo is being planned by the Norwich High School Student Government, Key Club, and Service Learning Program.
“Safe Summer Fun Day is meant to help kids find safe activities for the summer,” said Parsons. Besides the rodeo, there will be music, food and ice cream, an inflatable obstacle course and a dunk tank, which local teachers and firefighters have agreed to participate in.
The interactive programming planned also includes a fire safety puppet show. The Boy Scouts will set up a mock camp site that children can explore and will feature a camping safety presentation.
The Sheriff’s office will be taking fingerprints while the Norwich City Police will be registering bikes.
Both Parsons and Pettit would like to thank the many community businesses for participating. Without community support the event would not be able to happen, they said. “By doing this every year, it shows what a positive impact the community has on kids,” said Pettit.
“It is a very good way to give back to the community. Kids really need things that are positive and fun,” said Parsons.
