Chenango Public Health offers free vaccines for children

NORWICH – While for some school is ending, Chenango County Public Health, in conjunction with Norwich Rotary and P&C, would like to remind families of the importance of immunizations prior to a child’s first year at school.
The annual Shots for Tots event will be taking place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at P&C Food and Pharmacy. Parents should bring their child’s shot records to the event in order for the child to be vaccinated.
All vaccines suggested for children between the ages of four and six will be available to the public free of charge. These vaccines include: DTaP, IPV, MMR, Varicella and Influenza, all of which are recommended for children prior to the start of their first year of school. PPV, Hepatitis A and McV4 will also be available to those children in high risk groups.
Last year Shots for Tots gave over 100 vaccinations and Chenango Public Health is hoping to improve that number this weekend. “Vaccinating children is important to protect them from major diseases and to protect the community,” said Shots for Tots coordinator Jacqueline Knoll-Carr.
However, in recent years some parents have been opting not to immunize their children for fear the shots will cause autism. “The government has released no valid information to link immunization to autism,” said Knoll-Carr.
Without immunization, children are at risk of contracting diseases such as polio, diphtheria or the measles. “The advantages of vaccination greatly outweigh the risk,” said Knoll-Carr.
The Shots for Tots event will also include fun activities for the children to enjoy. Children’s book characters, Biscuit the Dog, Blaze the Dog and the Guess How Much I Love You Bunny will be visiting P&C. Snacks and health information will be available to the public.
The Norwich Police Department will provide fingerprinting services and a fire truck from the Norwich Fire Department will be there for the children to explore. “We are hoping many kids come to be vaccinated and come to see our story book characters,” said Knoll-Carr.
