Mother organizes local diabetes ride in memory of her daughter
NORWICH – In Broome and Oneida counties, an active approach is being taken annually to raise money and awareness for diabetes, a disease that kills thousands of people each year. Locally, one woman is trying to do the same by starting an annual “bike-ride” fundraiser here.
Nancy Peterson has recently been authorized to represent the American Diabetes Association (ADA), Syracuse chapter, and has started collecting donations. Her first bike/car ride has been coined “Heidee’s Cruise for Diabetes.” This event is dedicated to her daughter, who died last year from the complications of the disease.
“I wanted to open it up to cars as well because not everyone may have, or want, to ride a bike,” said Peterson.
The ride will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, and will begin at the Ontario Hotel in Norwich. The event will conclude with a chicken barbecue at the Balsam Inn in Pharsalia. Peterson said the charge is $15 per bike or car with the barbecue included. “There will be a poker hand, raffles, prizes and a DJ service,” she said.
Proceeds from the ride help to fund research, information programs and advocacy and awareness efforts that support the 20.8 million people with diabetes in communities across America.
According to the ADA, each day approximately 2,740 people are diagnosed with diabetes, a disease that has no cure. About 1.3 million people will be diagnosed this year alone and diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States.
“I wanted to start something that would benefit many people. In memory of my daughter, this is something I just wanted to do,” Peterson said. She said her daughter was diagnosed with diabetes at age three and there are many people in her family who also have the disease.
The organizer said she hopes to make the ride an annual fundraiser in the area and one day set up a committee that will plan and oversee the event. “I am hoping for a great turn out,” she said, stating also she hopes to raise at least $1,000 for the ADA.
For more information or to donate to the cause, call Peterson at home 647-5015 or on her cell phone at 244-9449. Shane Willcox, Peterson’s son, will also be taking calls at 316-5969.
