Dime to golfball-sized hail does damage in northern Chenango County

CHENANGO COUNTY – Random blasts of hail ranging in size did most of its damage in northern Chenango County as storms passed through the area Monday afternoon, emergency officials say.
Lightning also struck two homes in Sherburne and New Berlin.
“The majority of damage was from the hail,” said county Emergency Coordinator Matt Beckwith. “We heard reports that it was anywhere from dime to golfball-sized.”
Beckwith said there were reports of slick roads, damaged vehicles and downed tree limbs as a result of the falling ice balls stretching from the Town of Plymouth to the Town of New Berlin. Hail and heavy lightning also caused some damage in the Afton-Bainbridge area, he said. No injuries were reported.
Downed electrical wires closed a portion of state Rt. 8 between South New Berlin and New Berlin Monday afternoon.
More than 2,500 electricity customers were without power after severe thunderstorms rolled through eastern New York, knocking down trees and power lines and pelting some areas with popcorn-size hail, according to The Associated Press.
Most of the outages were in Albany County. Severe thunderstorm warnings were up around the state, with forecasters saying winds could top 60 mph and hail as big as nickels could fall.
Hail fell in the Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse areas as well as the Hudson Valley.
