Village of Earlville discusses contract for police coverage

EARLVILLE – During an executive session Monday night, the Village of Earlville Board discussed a proposed contract with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department for police coverage.
The Earlville Police Department has not been active since the village police officer resigned in April of 2006. Since that time, the village has been discussing options, including setting up a base office for the New York State Police in the former police station, contracting with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and working out contract agreements with the Village of Sherburne for joint police coverage.
Monday night, the board entered into an executive session to discuss a contract for coverage with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. The contract has been approved by the Village Attorney William Getman. When the board re-entered the public portion of the meeting, Mayor Toni Campbell said a motion had been made to recommend the contract agreement. The conditions of the contract, which the mayor said could not be discussed at the present time, will not be released until the contract has been officially accepted by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, a process that should take approximately 10 days. No financial agreements were made. If the contract is approved by the other party, the board will officially enter into the contract agreement at its next meeting at 7 p.m. on July 8 at the Village Office.
During Monday’s meeting, the village board also discussed adding a village fireworks display to this year’s Community Days. The board voted in favor of hosting a fireworks display on Saturday, July 12. The Community Days will be held from Friday, July 11 to Sunday, July 13. The board passed a motion to have the American Fireworks Company in Utica put on a 20-minute fireworks display at a maximum cost of $2,500. The motion passed by a margin of three to one, with Trustee Gerald Hayes opposing the motion.
The board also approved the purchase of an air conditioner for the village office, at a cost of $399.
