Long-time Pressman retires from Mid-York
SHERBURNE – Bob Tenney, President of The Mid-York Press, Inc., in Sherburne, has announced year-end retirement plans for long-time employee Lawrence Blackman.
Blackman joined Mid-York Press, Inc. right after graduation from Norwich High School, working first at the company’s location on Front Street in Norwich. Except for a two-year hiatus in the mid-60’s when he was drafted by the Army, his entire career has been with Mid-York Press. While he took a brief break from Mid-York, Blackman did not take a break from printing. His career in the service was behind a press in Japan where he printed propaganda leaflets that were dropped over Korea and Vietnam.
During his 46 year career in printing Blackman has run and repaired virtually every piece of equipment required to produce the commercial printing, labels and cartons Mid-York Press has produced over the years. In the first half of his career his expertise supplied the printing needs of the Norwich Pharmacal Company and its successor, Norwich Eaton Pharmaceuticals.
Over the years Mid-York Press’s customer base has vastly expanded. Today the company ships pharmaceutical and cosmetic packaging to nearly every state in the Country. After being filled by their customers, many of the Company’s cartons are shipped over seas.
“I would roughly estimate that Larry has touched cartons printed in 60 foreign languages during his career with us,” comments Tenney.
As Mid-York Press grew, so did Blackman’s printing expertise. This expertise coupled with his mechanical aptitude made him the logical candidate for Plant Engineer, a position created in the mid-80’s and which he continues to fill today. “While we are pleased that Larry and Jean (Larry’s wife) will now have the time to take the long road trips of which they have always dreamed, we know that replacing Larry’s knowledge and dedication will be virtually impossible,” says Tenney.
