Smyrna celebrates bicentennial with event tonight
SMYRNA – The Town of Smyrna will have a night of celebrating tonight, as they commemorate the town’s 200th birthday and the 90th anniversary of the Smyrna Volunteer Band.
A special event will be held to celebrate. The event will mark the first band concert of the season, a tradition that began 90 years ago. In addition, the Town of Smyrna will hold another bicentennial celebration, featuring the town’s bicentennial cancellation stamp.
The band will warm up at 6:30 p.m. in the library, and the Smyrna Postmaster will set up on the library’s porch to offer a special stamp cancellation with the bicentennial cancellation stamp. Cancellation stamps are used by the post office to cancel the postage on envelopes. A special cancellation stamp has been created to honor Smyrna’s Bicentennial.
Envelopes will be available at the memorabilia table in the fire house for $1 a piece. They feature historical pictures of the town, including: Eri Stokes Hotel, 1863; The First Congregational Church; The Bonney Church, 1911; The Smyrna Baptist Church, 1885; The Smyrna Opera House, 1908; Smyrna Main Street, 1901; Bicentennial 1808 Smyrna NY 2008 with a picture of Main Street, 1901; S&S Feeds; and The M.E.
