Greene captures league title in first season

EDMESTON – In its first season playing in the Otsenango Pony League, Greene could not have scripted a better result.
Using the formula of solid pitching and clutch hitting that led it to 11 previous wins, Greene upended previously-unbeaten Unadilla Valley in the league title game, 5-2 at Ron Tasior Field Tuesday evening.
“I felt all season long our strength has been to take advantage of the other team’s mistakes, and not make the critical mistakes ourselves,” said Greene head coach Dave Gorton.
Unadilla Valley’s mistakes came few and far between, and about the only one that proved costly came in Greene’s four-run fifth inning to open a 5-0 lead.
Designated hitter Kale Webb hit a short bouncer in front of the pitcher’s mound, and the ensuing throw to first by UV hurler Andrew Delmar eluded first baseman John Scofield allowing Webb to move to second base. Walks drawn by lead-off hitter Jeff Carlin and number two batter Dan Treadwell loaded the bases.
Scott Gorton bounced into a groundout scoring Webb, and winning pitcher Nic Puglisi knocked in two with a single. Later in the frame, Nate Patrick’s RBI double plated Matt Jones.
Puglisi was Greene’s hitting and pitching star finishing 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and three RBI. He put the first run on the board in the opening frame singling in Carlin.
Puglisi finished with 10 whiffs and allowed seven UV hits.
UV hung close by consistently making the routine play on defense to work out of jams. However, several scoring opportunities were squandered early on.
Puglisi worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning striking out the side. UV had two hits in the third and a runner in scoring position, but again Puglisi summoned a strikeout to end the threat.
Kevin Davis singled in the bottom of the fifth for UV, and scored his team’s first run after a series of wild pitches.
UV, which trailed in its first two playoff games before picking up the win, started a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh when, Zach Montgomery walked, and scored on Brett Smith’s double to center field. Corin Todd hit a high bouncer that yielded an infield hit setting the stage for clean-up hitter Andrew Delmar. Delmar already had two hits on the day, and ripped a shot up the middle that Puglisi nabbed and calmly threw to first for the final out.
Smith led UV (12-1) with three basehits. “I was very impressed with Unadilla Valley and the way they fielded the ball,” Gorton said. “Both programs have a lot to look forward to in the future.”
