CHENANGO COUNTY– This year’s Mr. and Mrs. Chenango County Fair will make their first appearance in the Fireman’s Parade Tuesday.
The Board of Directors of the Chenango County Agricultural Society have selected Jean Townsend and Alf Franklin to be representatives of the 161st Chenango County Fair.
Townsend and Franklin have been married for 56 years. They have been attending the fair for longer than they remember. “I like to go to the fair because of the candy apples and the exhibition hall,” said Townsend.
Both Townsend and Franklin are honored to be chosen as Mr. and Mrs. Chenango County Fair. “I was pretty thrilled and honored to be selected for the position,” said Franklin.
“We are very pleased to recognize this couple as representatives of our Agricultural Society and examples of this county’s agricultural heritage,” said Mary Weidman, president of the Chenango County Fair Board of Directors.
The couple has experienced a rich history in Chenango County as lifetime residents. As youths, they both participated in their local 4-H program.
Franklin said he feels he represents Chenango County because he has lived here his whole life and knows a lot of the people. “I like to see all the people at the fair,” he said.
Franklin has worked as a farmer, mechanic and for the Chenango County Highway Department. After retirement, he worked at the fairgrounds and operated a small engine repair service.
Townsend worked at the Norwich Shoe Company for many years before raising her six children. They now have 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, a majority of whom live in Chenango County.
Both now spend their time at Carmen’s Restaurant greeting and working with their daughter-in-law, who owns the city eatery.
To meet Mr. and Mrs. Chenango County, attend the Chenango County Fair between Aug. 5 and 10. They will be available to greet exhibitors and fair-goers during the activity-filled days.
