Greene couple charged with nine felonies for forging checks
GREENE – Police arrested a couple in Greene Friday, accusing them of cashing stolen checks and forging the victim’s signature in order to steal nearly $3,000 from a local bank.
The Village of Greene Police Department announced the arrest of Heidi Cronin, 33, and Joseph Cronin, 32, of 12 Park Street Extension, Greene, for nine felony counts of second degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Police Chief Steven Dutcher said all the checks cashed were stolen from an Afton residence in late June.
“With help from the bank, we were able to trace all the checks back to Heidi and Joe. We drew up felony warrants on Monday, August 4 and began to search for the Cronins. They were aware they were wanted and were advised by their attorneys to turn themselves in, but they chose not to,” said Dutcher.
Binghamton City Police arrested the couple and returned them to Chenango County after Greene authorities received a number of tips that the fugitives were hiding at a Binghamton residence.
Binghamton police reported that while in the process of executing the warrant, Heidi Cronin was charged with seventh degree possession of controlled substance and resisting arrest.
“Heidi resisted arrest and then patrol discovered a quantity of heroin on her and a hypodermic needle. Joseph had no additional charges besides the warrant being served,” said Detective’s Captain Alex Minor of the Binghamton Police Department.
The couple was arraigned in Village of Greene Court Friday evening and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $50,000 bail each.
“We appreciate the assistance of the Binghamton City Police Department in this matter, and we also appreciate the assistance we received from the public in tracking them down,” said Dutcher.
