NYRI files with Public Service Commission
ALBANY – The county’s top planning official is concerned that a filing made last week by New York Regional Interconnect (NYRI) could complete the proposed power line’s application with the Public Service Commission.
“My understanding is that this filing answers the last of the deficiencies in the application,” said Chenango County Director of Planning Donna M. Jones, who also serves as the designated local representative for Communities Against Regional Interconnect (CARI). “This is the closest it has come to being a completed application. If it is approved, then the application will likely be accepted.”
NYRI representative David Kalson confirmed the filing, made on Aug. 8, was in response to the deficiency letter issued by the Public Service Commission on March 24. The PSC has yet to rule whether the filing has fulfilled the requirements set out in the letter.
According to Jones, if the commission does accept the application as complete, it will begin a one-year timeline for review of the project at the state level. Groups and individuals who oppose the proposed 190-mile, 1,200 megawatt electrical transmission line will need to step up their timelines as well.
“We’ll be under the gun,” said Jones. “We will have to step up our legal activities.”
Even though groups such as CARI have been actively fighting the project, Jones is concerned that NYRI has fallen out of people’s minds with the increased focus on natural gas exploration in the county.
“This is just as much of a hot topic,” said Jones. “It is a threat to our county. We can’t forget about it.”
