S-E stands behind recovering principal
SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville Board of Education made it clear at Monday night’s meeting that they would be standing behind their high school principal while he works toward recovery.
High School Principal Keith Reed Jr., 47, Norwich, was involved in a motor vehicle accident on Friday afternoon. Reed was riding his motorcycle south on Route 12 in Oxford when he collided into the side of a pick-up truck that failed to yield the right of way.
Superintendent Gayle Hellert updated the board and the members of the public about Reed’s condition. “He’s still critical, but he’s stable,” she said. With multiple broken bones, cuts, scrapes and lacerations, Reed is expected to remain in the intensive care unit at Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City for at least a month. Reed is expected to undergo several surgeries and physical therapy.
“Keith is looking at a substantially long recovery. It could easily take the whole school year,” said Board President Doug Shattuck. “It’s important to the board and the district that the principal’s job stays here. We want [Keith] back.”
While Reed is recovering, Assistant Principal Grant Woodward will be working as the interim principal. Board Member Patrick Dunshee asked if there were resources in place to help Woodward so he doesn’t become overwhelmed.
“Everybody is ready to step up and assist,” Hellert said. She explained that the administrative team spent a lot of time over the summer planning for the upcoming year.
“Dealing with discipline may be an issue. I hope it’s minimal, but if not, we will regroup and decide how to support Grant with that,” Hellert said.
Board Vice President Thomas Canton asked if a test period were really needed. “Isn’t there a need here?” Canton asked.
Hellert said the beginning of the school year is generally quiet, however she said she will present the board with some options at the next board meeting. Hellert said someone inside the school may be asked to assist with discipline, depending on schedules.
Hellert said she will continue to update the community on Reed’s condition via the school’s web site, www.secsd.org.
