Pedestrian airlifted after being hit by car

NORWICH – Residents along North Broad Street in the City of Norwich were awoken last night by police and fire sirens as emergency crews responded to a pedestrian being struck by a car.
Claude F. Cooper, 73, of Norwich, was airlifted to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City after he was struck by a 2002 Ford Escort driven by Michael S. Novack, 52, of Norwich, as he attempted to cross the street.
The accident took place at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday on North Broad Street near Lackawanna Avenue as Novack traveled north.
Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino said Cooper was crossing the road without the aid of a crosswalk or traffic light.
Police would not elaborate on the specifics of Cooper’s injuries, but said they were extensive.
Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo reported that a department ambulance was in route back to the station and witnessed the accident.
“We were fortunate to have them on scene,” said Chawgo. Cooper was transported to Greene and then flown to Wilson by Guthrie helicopter.
“There was no alcohol involvement on the part of the operator of the motor vehicle,” said Angelino.
No tickets have yet been issued. The Norwich PD is still investigating the incident.
