Historical Society expanding Labor Day Antique Show

NORWICH – The Chenango County Historical Society is preparing to hold its largest annual fundraiser this Sunday at the county fairgrounds in Norwich.
The 32nd Annual Antiques Show is expected to be one of the largest yet with a number of additions to this year’s event.
“There will be well over 50 dealers, each with their own unique and interesting pieces, not to mention the food vendors,” said Historical Society Director Dave Drucker.
“Also this year we’ll have a bluegrass band playing for entertainment between one and three in the afternoon. The committee has put in a great deal of work for this year’s event,” said Historical Society Trustee Howard Fogel.
“It’s really not just the same old show. We are hoping to begin a few new traditions,” said Trustee Thomas Knapp.
“They’ll be any number of things, furniture, glassware, coins, books, art, prints, even marbles and many more surprises we don’t even know about,” said Trustee Dale Storms.
The committee members also said they had invited many of the local town and village historical societies to join them at this year’s event and many had expressed great interest in coming together. Also coming this year is the Bullthistle Model Railroad Society, which will have an open exhibit.
“It may not be the largest, but we certainly do our best to ensure it’s of quality,” said Fogel. Some vendors at the show come from as far as 200 miles away.
The show will include free antique appraisals from 1 to 4 p.m. by the Marquis Gallery in Earlville, assisted by antique book dealer Tracy Law and the society’s educator, Diane Hamblin.
The committee said the event would be held rain or shine and although the current weather forecast predicts clear skies, the group proactively made arrangements to have a large tent near the exhibition hall, just in case.
Admission to this year’s event is $4 a head and the gates open at 8 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. Sunday.
“This is a fundraising effort. The dollars they pay for admission essentially go to the funding for the historical society, and it’s the largest one we do for the year,” said Drucker.
