Big second half keeps Oxford unbeaten

Boys’ Soccer

Oxford 6, B-G 2
OXFORD – The first half, by Oxford coach Jon Rogers’ admission, was lackluster. The second 40 minutes resembled the type of play that led Oxford to three previous wins.
Tied with the Bobcats at 2-2, Oxford scored the tie-breaking goal just 1:30 into the second half, and poured it on for a runaway victory.
Jacob Carr was assisted by Taylor Bates early in the second half, and 2 1/2 minutes later, the same combination made it a two-goal advantage. “The first half we probably played our worst soccer yet, and B-G’s coach said the same thing about his team,” Rogers said. “I’m not sure what it was, but I tried to light a fire under them at halftime, and in the second half, boy, they came out like a different team.”
Bates had another big game finishing with two goals and four assists. He has eight tallies on the season to go with five helpers.
Justin Schray and Noah Auwater had first-half goals for the Blackhawks.
Steve Patten netted B-G’s first goal, and Evan Palmer scored unassisted late in the first half to tie the game.
Oxford plays at Greene Thursday.

“We did not come out and play well in the first half,” said S-E coach Mike Rodriguez, whose club dropped to 0-4 overall. “We were not aggressive to the ball. We played more aggressively in the second half, and that’s when we generated some of our cornerkicks.”

Sidney 4, Unadilla Valley 2
NEW BERLIN – In a battle of clubs seeking their first win of the season, Sidney built a 3-1 halftime lead, and tightened the defense the final 40 minutes to hold on for the victory.
“Their coach (in the second half) did exactly what I would have done,” said UV coach Ryan Houck. “They put their best players back on defense in the second half, and they packed it in. They wanted a win, and it’s tough for any team to score with 10 men back on defense.”
Sidney scored at 13:21 and 16:05 of the first half to grab the early lead. UV’s Lane Allen scored in the first half, and Fred Hutchinson netted his second goal of the year cutting the margin to 3-2. Sidney added an insurance goal with two seconds left after the Storm had pushed their entire lineup forward in an effort to tie the game. “No other way to put it, we came out flat in the first half,” Houck said. “Soccer is a game of momentum, and once you lose it, it’s tough to get it back.”
