Sherburne receives funding for Safe Routes to School
SHERBURNE – The Village of Sherburne is trying to help area residents incorporate walking into their daily routine, and with some help from a federal grant, they are one step closer to their goal.
Sherburne was one of the villages awarded funding for the Safe Routes to Schools grant.
The New York State Department of Transportation awarded $27 million in funding for the program, which is intended to “promote healthy transportation alternatives,” according to a press release.
Sherburne applied for the grant in March. The proposal focused on walking routes on Classic Street, which Mayor William Acee said at the time, had become a popular pedestrian route for children and adults alike.
Sherburne was awarded $138,000, which will be used to install 1,340 linear feet of four-foot wide sidewalk on the east side of the road. The completion of the stretch of sidewalk will eliminate two potentially dangerous crossings for students walking to school. In March, Acee said Classic Street has become a popular through street, and many parents are reluctant to let their children walk to school, sighting the frequent crossings as a concern.
The street is also used by school athletes who run along the street and by young students during school related walks to the public library and the village park.
“The intent of the Safe Routes to School program is to enable and encourage children to adopt a more healthy and active lifestyle by making bicycling and walking a safer and more appealing transportation alternative,” the release says.
The sidewalk construction will be bid out and will most likely not begin until next summer. “This grant fits perfectly. This will provide a sidewalk connecting the school to the village and create a safe walkway for both students and teachers to walk to school without unsafe mid-street crossings. I am very pleased about this good news,” Acee said.
The Village of Afton also received funding through the program. Afton received $93,881 for sidewalk improvements.
