Norwich netters too tough for Warriors

Norwich 5, Chenango Valley 2
NORWICH – Norwich swept all four singles matches for the first time this season, and won its second match in as many days to move over the .500 mark.
Sophie Stewart and Bryn Loomis captured straight sets wins at first and second singles, Reva Seager won in straight sets at third singles, and Jessica Lerner improved to 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 win at fourth singles. “I thought this would be a closer match,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “The kids are really playing well and playing with confidence.”
At first doubles, Krissie Collier and Katie Orioli remained perfect on the season as well with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory. “This was an impressive win for us,” Stewart added.
Norwich (3-2) is at Johnson City Friday.

NEW BERLIN – A sweep of the doubles matches, both in straight sets, pushed UV to its second win in three matches this season.
Amber Potter and Hannah Benson, who won at first doubles, and Alaina Emerson along with Amanda Button at second doubles, did not give up more than two games as each won easily.
Lindsay Avolio grabbed the Storm’s other team point with a victory at third singles.

Girls’ Soccer

Unadilla Valley 2, Greene 2 (OT)
NEW BERLIN – After 80 minutes of scoreless action, the fireworks began in overtime, particularly the second 10-minute extra period.
Unadilla Valley netted the first overtime goal, but needed to regroup after back-to-back Greene tallies to forge a tie. “Our kids responded and came back,” said UV coach Chris Bieniek. “I give them a lot of credit.”
UV broke the ice 3:24 into the opening overtime when, Amanda Peek netted the first of her two goals after an Amanda Tumilowicz pass.
Megan McDermott, the Trojans’ high-scoring forward, tied the game early in the second overtime, and put her club ahead just 2:24 into the period.
UV’s Peek notched the game-tying tally just 46 seconds later at 3:10 getting an assist from Kate Fagan. “It was a total team effort and our forward line had a lot of good opportunities,” Bieniek said. “Hannah Johnson contained McDermott most of the game, and Emily (Sugar) made a nice diving save at the end.”
UV’s record stands at 2-1-2 overall (1-1-2 in league).

MUNNSVILLE – Hannah Trew had a pair of goals for Stockbridge Valley, who did a better job capitalizing on scoring opportunities, said OV coach Kevin Springer.
“We had several scoring chances, but couldn’t get a solid foot on the ball or we would have a miskick,” he said. “We didn’t connect when we needed to, and the few times they got through, they cashed them in.”
OV (0-2) plays at the DeRuyter Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Sarah Bonnell had Norwich’s lone tally getting an assist from Charlotte Fetzko.

OXFORD – Oxford suffered its third loss in four games losing by shutout to the Warriors on Wednesday.
Kristen Jones, Lyndsay Delello, and Alesha Voltz had goals for Sidney. Jones tallied just give minutes into the gme, and Delello had the first goal of the second half, again, at the five-minute mark. “I think they worked a lot harder than we did,” said Oxford coach Melissa Chrystie. “With the trouble we’ve had generating offense, we can’t find ourselves behind because it’s too much of a struggle to score.”
Oxford dropped to 2-3 overall.

Cross Country

S-E wins two of three
WEST CANADA VALLEY – Sherburne-Earlville’s boys overtook Ilion, a team that had its number a year ago, and went on to win two of three dual matchups at West Canada Valley’s five-kilometer layout Wednesday.
Buoyed by three finishes within the top-nine (out of 27 runners), S-E is off to strong start, said co-head coach Anne Geary. “We had a nice pack of runners, and I was extremely pleased with the results,” Geary said. “We weren’t able to touch Ilion last year, and our first race of the season we nipped them by five (26-31).
Noah Huff led the S-E contingent finishing fifth in 19:46, Dan Stanton was next at 20:01 to place seventh, and Dan Palmiter took ninth in 20:04. Derek Murray (12th, 21:02) and Dan DuBois (15th, 22:38) rounded out S-E’s scoring.
The Marauders’ girls had just two girls available for the race. Sophomore Sofeia Eddy was fourth out of 15 runners timing 23:04, and Stephanie Staley was 11th in 27:10.
S-E competes at the Chittenango Invitational Saturday.

Seton Catholic Central, 198, Norwich 206
BINGHAMTON – Norwich was solid at the top of the lineup getting a boost from medalist Jacob Kelly, but it was not enough to overtake the balance of Seton Catholic Central’s lineup Wednesday at Ely Park Golf Club.
Kelly finished with a one-over-par 35, Frank Somich was just two strokes back at 37, and Eric Walling carded a 40 for the Tornado (2-3). All five of the Saints’ scores fell in the 36 to 42 range.
Norwich faces Chenango Valley Tuesday.
