Red Cross hosts Community Preparedness Day
NORWICH – Are you prepared for a disaster? That’s the question that the Southern Tier Chapter of the Red Cross wants families to ask themselves, and if the answer is no, this weekend’s Community Preparedness Day could change that.
In acknowledgment of National Preparedness Month, on Saturday the Red Cross and City of Norwich Mayor Joseph Maiurano will present a free cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training from 8:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Norwich Fire Department.
“AED machines are everywhere, but people aren’t trained to use them,” said Cynthia Smith Gordineer, executive director of the Southern Tier Chapter of the Red Cross. Although the machines provides step by step instructions for how to administer the electric shock, Gordineer said people are often afraid to use the machines if they are not familiar with them. “If you learn how to use the AED machine, it is much more valuable to the community. A person has to step up and use these machines to make a difference.”
Gordineer explained that while the AED machines are being installed in more and more places, like schools, grocery stores and parks, there is not a significant amount of training that is taking place.
In addition to the CPR course, the first 75 children of adults pre-registered for the course will be invited to attend youth programing, including classes on safety when children are home alone, first aid and preparedness. Children ages 7 to 11 are invited to attend.
To sponsor the event, the Southern Tier Chapter is partnering with a regional sponsor, Annese & Associates, Inc. “I was honored to be asked, on behalf of my company to sponsor such a vital cause. This event allows me to help not only my Annese family, but the communities as well,” company founder Frank Annese said in a press release. “I am honored to be an advocate for the Red Cross, as I truly believe in the power of education.”
Anyone wishing to pre-register for the event should go to the Red Cross web site at www.southerntierredcross.org or call 785-7207.
