B-G’s Ross breaks loose against Oxford; S-E wins first

B-G 36, Oxford 15
OXFORD – Outside of three running plays, Oxford coach Mike Chrystie felt his team played “okay.”
Those three plays, however, all went for long touchdown runs to give B-G its second win in as many years over the Blackhawks Friday night.
B-G senior Dustin Ross scored on his team’s second and fourth offensive plays – both 64-yard bursts – and he added a 56-yard jaunt in the fourth quarter to cap a 222-yard rushing day. “We talked about containing Ross, and we just lost contain on three plays,” said Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “They didn’t show us anything we weren’t prepared for. We didn’t execute on a few plays, and that cost us.”
James Banta scored on his second TD reception of the year from B-G quarterback Justin Pepper in the second quarter to help up the margin to 24-0.
Oxford got on the board before halftime on Travis Frank’s one-yard run. Frank was the workhorse on offense and defense for Oxford rushing for 67 yards, while also picking up a team-high 12 tackles. “We’re going to rely heavily on Travis’ experience and work ethic the rest of the season,” Chrystie said. “He always gives us everything he has.”
Pepper added a TD run in the third quarter, the second straight week he had at least a scoring pass and a scoring run.
Frank’s four-yard TD run in the fourth made it 30-15, and Oxford had an opportunity to do further damage, but fumbled away a punt return.

Sherburne-Earlville 20, UV-Edmeston 6
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville did a lot with the ball in a little amount of time, and played opportunistic defense to secure its first win of the season and avenge last year’s defeat to the Storm.
Phil Price caught a pair of TD passes from senior quarterback Logan Klockowski, the only two completions for the Marauders in the game.
Meanwhile, a defense that spent the majority of the time on the field, recovered four Storm fumbles and picked off one pass. “It rained like heck, I’m surprised both teams held onto the ball as well as they did,” summed up S-E head coach Mick James.
Nick Beadle opened the scoring for S-E on a short drive after a turnover. He scored on a one-yard fullback plunge, and Logan Aikens’ kick made it 7-0.
UV-E capped its only scoring drive on Jay Lloyd’s one-yard TD run in the second quarter. A missed PAT kick left the Storm a point short.
Tyler Blinebry returned the ensuing kickoff 31 yards to the 40, and two sizable runs by Nate Kline racked up 35 yards. On the third play of the drive, Price hauled in Klockowski’s 25-yard scoring toss.
With two minutes left in the game, Kline ripped off an 80-yard scoring jaunt, but a clipping penalty took six off the board and positioned S-E at the 20. On the next play, Price was wide open on a 20-yard TD strike. “This is a confidence builder for us, and we play so much harder than we did the first game,” James said.
UV-E ran for 235 yards on 57 carries. Lloyd finished with 90 yards on 24 carries, Eric Bennett had 69 rushing yards, and Jordan Williams 61. “It was a hard-hitting game on both sides, and they didn’t break any long ones,” James said. “They got a lot of short-yardage carries and moved the chains.”
A key moment in the game occurred late in the first half. UV-E drove to the S-E two with an opportunity to cash in a tying touchdown. On an interior rush, an S-E defender put a helmet on the ball forcing one of the four fumble recoveries. “I felt we dominated possession and were able to move the ball well, just like last year,” said UV-E coach Jack Loeffler. “We just had too many penalties and turnovers.”
Kline led all rushers with 152 yards on 15 carries.
