NY Pizzeria Tournament
B-G 2, Unadilla Valley 1
Norwich 3, G-MU 2
NEW BERLIN – Bainbridge-Guilford’s New York Pizzeria Tournament title was all about making the most of its opportunities.
Limited to just five shots through regulation and overtime, the last of those five shots gave the Bobcats the edge. Dani Conway recovered a rebound off a missed shot, and pushed the ball to Kimberly Hart for the winner with just over three minutes left in the first overtime.
B-G goalie Caitlyn Anderson, named the tournament’s most valuable player, continued to stifle the UV offense along with sharp play from her defensive backfield. “We probably, to be honest, are not quite as skilled as they are,” said B-G coach George Williams. “Our kids played with a lot of heart and challenged every ball as best they could. We’ve been playing well, so it was nice to see that pay off.”
B-G scored the intial goal in the second half with 13:19 expired. Conway broke loose after a pass from the defense, and took the ball from just past midfield all the way for the unassited goal.
UV answered back about a 90 seconds later on Kara Collins’ goal. UV produced numerous scoring chances throughout the second half an overtime, but could not find the scoring touch. “We talked about give ourselves opportunities to score, and we didn’t make the most of them,” said UV coach Chris Bieniek. “They scored their goals on the one-on-ones. We play defense aggressively, so when we get beat, we pay the consequences.”
Norwich used a fast start in each half to create some breathing room against G-MU to win the consolation game, the first win for the Tornado this season.
Sarah Bonnell scored 1:04 into the game, and she followed that with another goal at 28:10.
Miranda Costin scored her second goal of the tournament just 1:41 into the second half putting Norwich up 3-1.
G-MU countered with two goals from Kristen Gonzalez, the first one assisted by Cheyanne Ditty. “We lost another starter last night (to injury), so we’ll take the win,” said Norwich coach Jeremy Bolton. “I try to get the girls to come out hard the first five minutes of every game, and some games it’s harder to do than others.”
Friday, B-G advanced to the finals with a 2-0 shutout over the Raiders on Friday. Alyssa Falciani and Lauren Porter had goals, and Anderson added four saves.
Unadilla Valley had no trouble finishing against Norwich to reach the finals winning 4-1. Amanda Tumilowicz had the first goal 9:57 into play, and Amanda Peek put in a loose ball with one second left in the half to snap a 1-1 tie.
Costin scored her first varsity goal to answer Tumilowicz’s opening tally.
