Norwich’s Keator closing in on a school record

NORWICH – Senior Savanna Keator crept up closer to the 200-yard freestyle record, and Norwich eased past Whitney Point for its second meet win of the season Tuesday.
Keator fell just eight hundreths of a second short off the school mark winning the 200 in 2:03.24. She also won the 100-yard freestyle, and teammates Makenzie Williams, Haley Chwazik-Gee, and Lauren Fitch had victories. “The girls swam really well, and we put them into different events to see their time,” said Norwich coach Amanda Downey. “We’ve been pushing Savanna really hard in the 200, and she wants that record really bad.”
Williams captured the 200 individual medley, Fitch the one-meter diving competition, and Gee grabbed a win in the 100 breaststroke. Norwich (2-1) is at Sus Valley Friday.

GREENE – Three Greene swimmers picked up their first varsity wins, and the Trojans evened their season record at 2-2 with a win over MAC foe Afton/B-G/Oxford/Harpursville.
Alison Norton and Rachel Paukett participated on winning relays for the first time, and Seana Farrow captured the 500-yard freestyle. “Each one of athletes puts in the same amount of yardage, and they should have the opportunity to swim in the pressure events,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “This gives them a chance to prove themselves.”
Greene’s staples at the top, Helen Zaengle, Emily Dunckle, Katie Crowe, Leah Kazalski, and Katie Crowe also had wins.
Greene (2-1, 2-2) is at improved Sherburne-Earlville Tuesday.

FENTON – Chenango Valley’s offense solved the Purple Tornado defense 18 minutes into play, and the Tornado gave up an own goal shortly thereafter in Tuesday’s matchup.
“The first 10 minutes we played really well, and that’s where we got our shots,” said Norwich coach John McCumiskey. “After that, our offense was nonexistent. They controlled the game with speed and skillful passing.”
Colin Bigart scored CV’s initial goal, one of four different players to find the Norwich net.

GREENE – Greene scored all of its goals over the final 19 minutes to defeat a dangerous Oxford club on Tuesday. “They scare the heck out of me, and their forwards (Haley Witchella and Amanda Brown) are so fast,” said Greene coach Randy smith. “That’s a competent team.”
Liz Wentlent scored the first of her two goals after a Megan McDermott cornerkick at 19 minutes, then headed in another McDermott corner with five minutes left. McDermott completed the scoring with 2 1/2 minutes remaining.
“We concentrated on limiting their offensive opportunities, and the defensive play of Amanda Weeks and Chelsea Pornbeck on Witchella and Brown was huge the whole game,” Smith said.
Greene (3-1-1, 3-3-1) is at Unatego Thursday.

Franklin 3, G-MU 2 (OT)
COPES CORNERS – Franklin rallied from a one-goal halftime deficit, and Lily Stalter put in her second and third goals of the game in overtime to give the Purple Devils a tight win over the Raiders Tuesday.
G-MU led at halftime on the strength of Courtney Hillman’s unassisted goal. “We battled all the way and we had one letdown,” said G-MU coach Kristen Bradbury. “Our intensity and aggressiveness was better than any game we have played this year.”
Stalter had goals at the six- and nine-minute marks of the first overtime.
Blake Stensland drew G-MU within one goal with four minutes left getting a pass from Cheyanne Ditty. A tying goal attempt late in the game was saved by the Purple Devils.

BAINBRIDGE – Unadilla Valley gained a measure of redemption just three days after losing to B-G in the finals of its home tournament.
The Storm scored two first-half goals, and withstood the Bobcats’ second-half pressure for their fourth win of the season. “I think we were more than half a step slow in the first half, and they were all over us,” said B-G coach George Williams.
Sakura Gysin scored the opening goal for UV just 4:25 into the game off an Amanda Peek pass. Kate Fagan tallied later in the period giving her club the two-goal halftime advantage.
Dani Conway sliced the lead to one goal just 4 1/2 minutes into the second half, and the Bobcats mounted a sustained attack that yielded all six of their shots on goal. “We had the game where we wanted it, but we could not get the tying goal in,” Williams said.
B-G dropped to 3-5 overall.

Norwich 210, Chenango Valley 217
NORWICH – Norwich upended Chenango Valley Tuesday at Canasawacta Country Club, and evened its record at 3-3 in the process.
Jacob Kelly shot a four-over-par 39 over C.C.C.’s old nine layout. Eric Walling followed with a 40, Frank Somich shot a 41; Ryan Cambron turned in a 44, and Ryan Hagen carded a 46.
“This is a very good win for us,” said Norwich coach Bob Branham, who said CV came into the match with a winning record. “With the young lineup we have and to compete this well, it’s very good.”

NORWICH – Chenango Valley had a stronger presence at the net en route to a 25-12, 26-24, 25-12 sweep of the Tornado Tuesday.
“The first game we played and passed well, and we bounced back and were up big in the second game,” said Norwich coach Paul Sims. “They fought back hard, but we made them earn their points.”
Kacy Boburka was CV’s dominant middle hitter finishing with 10 kills and four stuff blocks.
Norwich’s Michelle Testani finished with four kills, and Abby Dean had five assists.l
Norwich is at Chenango Forks Thursday.
