WALTON – Greene won its fourth straight game and remained a half game behind division leader Sidney in MAC soccer play.
Megan McDermott completed a hat trick with 30 seconds left in the game connecting on a direct kick from 25 yards out, and it put the game out of reach against an improved Walton club. “We struggled in the midfield today, and it is nice to have McDermott up front,” said Greene coach Randy Smith. “Walton had its chances, but our defense was able to close those out. We dodged one today.”
Greene (6-1-1, 6-3-1) hosts B-G Friday.

Brianna Vibbard made a run up the left side and executed a crossing pass to Gretchen Bradley for the go-ahead goal 52 seconds into the second half. “We were a little frustrated (offensively) in the first half, so we wanted to come out and be aggressive in the second half,” said S-E assistant coach Nigel Seddon.
Vibbard scored in the first half for S-E (4-1, 5-3-1) after a Sarah Brown feed. The Marauders play at Morrisville-Eaton, Friday at 7 p.m.

Garrett Ward scored the Mustangs’ final goal with two minutes remaining. “We did not take a step back, and I felt we played very well defensively,” said S-E coach Mike Rodriguez. “I was happy with the progress, especially against a good team.”

Bryn Loomis and Jessica Lerner headed up the Tornado at singles with straight sets wins, and Krissie Collier along with Katie Orioli moved to 9-0 at first doubles to kick off a sweep of three doubles matches. “We tried to step up and take hard shots in a match we can control,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “We had to take those shots so we can make them when we play the tougher teams.”

Jenna Farwell, Georgia Tucker, and Jessica Martin converted their penalty stroke attempts, and Oxford keeper Alyshia Crawford turned aside all of Deposit’s attempts. “We definitely had scoring chances in the game, and on defense, we made some good plays to keep the game tied,” said Oxford coach Melissa Chrystie. “We pretty much work on penalty strokes daily in practice. It’s something you have to do in the postseason, you we like to keep it fresh.”
Oxford (4-5) is at Walton Friday.

SHERBURNE – Canastota and Cooperstown made up nine of the top ten runners at Sherburne-Earlville’s home meet, and each squad defeated the Marauders’ boys in dual meet scoring.
S-E also dropped finals to Little Falls and Herkimer in a five-way meet. “I think we would have had more competitive scoring against Little Falls and Herkimer with our full lineup,” said S-E co-coach Anne Geary. Multiple dual-sport athletes were competing at an S-E soccer game. “Overall, our guys ran better, we just faced a stronger field.”
Dan Palmiter’s 19:42 led S-E as he placed 15th out of 59 runners.
Sofeia Eddy led Sherburne-Earlville’s three-girl contingent timing a 22:55 to place third out of 23 runners.
The Marauders compete at the E.J. Herman Invitational at Utica Saturday.
