Greene hosts Apple Fest Saturday

GREENE – More than 10,000 visitors are anticipated for this weekend’s Greene Apple Fest. For 22 years, the United Methodist Church has organized the annual event on the third Saturday in September. The main attraction? Apples, of course.

The day-long event will feature crafters, food vendors and activities for kids and adults. There will be pumpkin painting, pony rides, Civil War reenactments, a collection of antique engines and apple pressing demonstrations.

Festival chairperson Alice Cobb recommends visitors bring their appetite. “There is so much good food,” said Cobb.

More than 800 apple pies have been baked since Labor Day. Volunteers started even earlier on pies of the strawberry, rhubarb and blueberry variety. And they aren’t done yet. Cherry pies will be Friday’s focus, Cobb said, which will add between 50 to 70 pies to the total for Saturday’s event.
