Bricks & Mortar Report
EDITOR’S NOTE: The Bricks & Mortar Report provides updates on major construction projects in Chenango County.
Employment stats:
• The Chenango County Office of Employment and Training reported a 5.9 percent unemployment rate in August. The figure was the same in July, but compares to a 4.1 percent unemployment rate in August 2007.
• Chenango County’s rate is lower than the nation’s, at 6.1 percent, but more than New York’s overall unemployment rate of 5.6.
• One hundred jobs were lost in the Chenango County’s professional and business services sector since 2007, according to the monthly report.
Housing Starts (modular, double wide and stick built):
• Chenango County Codes Enforcement office reported 11 housing starts in August. There were two each in the towns of Bainbridge and Afton and one each in Smyrna, Sherburne, Preston, Pharsalia, Guilford, Coventry and Columbus.
Norwich Business Improvement District:
• Facade improvements, including new windows and signage, continues in downtown Norwich’s BID District. Contractors have been on the job at the Masonic Temple, Hayes Office Products and McNeil Jewelers.
Norwich City School District building project:
• About 99 percent of the outside landscaping has been completed. Construction trailers are scheduled to move out the first part of this week. Workers will be blacktopping the back parking/driveway areas and topsoiling lawns.
• The underground storm water retention pit in front of the Middle School has been delayed nearly a year due to design flaws. Superintendent Gerard O’Sullivan said contractors have agreed on a new design and are awaiting the results of recent soil tests at the site.
• O’Sullivan said the gymnasium complete with new bleachers would be turned over for use by students and faculty today.
• The fitness room, Middle School multipurpose room and all new classrooms are fully functioning. “The bulk of our work now is getting our computers and smart board systems up and running,” the superintendent said.
New York State Veterans’ Home:
• The opening of the new veteran’s home in Oxford has been delayed a month pending the arrival of furniture, state health department officials say.
• The original opening date was planned for Oct. 2.
New York State Valley Ridge Center For Intensive Treatment:
• A 14,000 square foot expansion planned for the facility on Upper Ravine Road in Norwich is still pending. Groundbreaking was scheduled for this year. Facility Director Chuck Kearley said the bids had not been returned, but the project is still moving forward. “We haven’t been told that it’s on hold,” he said.
• The facility is at full staff with 245 employees. Sixty mostly 18-35 year-old male inmates live in five housing units at the 23-acre treatment center.
• The Valley Ridge Board of Visitors meets at 8 a.m. Tuesday on the second floor in the Eaton Center. The meeting is open to the public. “Things are going very well and that’s the message I’m going to give to the board,” Kearley said.
