Oxford improves in setback to Harpursville

HARPURSVILLE – A penalty stroke with 10 seconds left put the finishing touch on Harpursville’s two-goal victory over the Blackhawks (5-6) Wednesday.
Oxford, despite a large deficit in shots and penalty corners, tied the game in the second half on Jessica Martin’s second goal of the game.
Harpursville’s Mackenzie Townsend found the Oxford cage at 13 minutes for the go-ahead goal. Harpursville finished with 15 shots and 21 total penalty corners. “I was really happy with our penalty corner defense, but you just can’t give a good team that many opportunities,” said Oxford coach Melissa Chrystie. “The first time we played them, we had no scoring chances and got lucky one time. “Today, we knocked on the door a couple of times. Harpursville is a good team, and they outplayed us by a little bit.”
Oxford is at Sidney Friday.

Each won two events and teamed on a pair of victorious relays. “In comparing times, I knew this would be a close meet, and more than half the races came right to the finish,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “It was an exciting meet and great for our team to be a part of.”

S-E wins two of three
ORISKANY – Sherburne-Earlville took the tack of focusing on a place finishes first before times, and it paid off it two dual wins for the boys.
S-E’s boys dropped a 17-44 final to Oriskany, but edged Poland (27-28) and New York Mills (27-29) in Center State Conference action. “We wanted to focus on getting some wins in our league, and the boys really did step it up,” said S-E co-head coach Anne Geary.
Noah Huff (20:46) and Dan Palmiter (21:02) ran seventh and eighth respectively out of 40 runners to lead the Marauders.
For the girls, sophomore Sofeia Eddy gave S-E its first overall first-place finisher this season winning the girls’ race in 24:46. Stephanie Staley was eighth in the 23-girl field finishing in 28:06.
Sherburne-Earlville hosts the annual S-E Invitational Saturday. The varsity girls race is tentatively slated for a 2:30 p.m. start.
