Gilbertsville hosts Quilt Show at Major's Inn
GILBERTSVILLE – This weekend is set to be a monumental one for the 14th annual Major’s Inn Quilt Show, which will feature more pieces and more artists than ever before.
This year’s creatively woven colors feature the theme “Fantasies of Fabric” and the quilts will again adorn the walls of the Tudor-style architectural jewel, The Major’s Inn, in the Village of Gilbertsville, located along Rt. 51.
Organizers for the Major’s Inn Foundation fundraiser, CeCe Rowe and Diana Heeman, said this year’s show will feature 260 handcrafted pieces from dozens of artists. Last year’s show exhibited 180 pieces.
“It’s the most we’ve ever had. Year after year it gets bigger and bigger. We used to go looking for participation, but now people are calling us asking to be in the show,” said Rowe.
Rowe and Heeman, who are members of the Inn’s foundation, started the first quilt show in 1994 and have helped to steer the program every step of the way.
“We just thought it might be a fun thing to do so we did it, and it’s been growing ever since,” said Rowe.
Rowe said the show is unique because it is not juried and not competitively driven. “It allows the artists to show their beautiful pieces without a jury. It’s just for fun and for appreciation,” she said.
The Quilt Show is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5.
The show’s featured artist is Deddy Clough, who has been creating pieces since 1976. Clough is president of the Susquehanna Valley Quilters Association and participates in a number of events and organizations that encourage the art.
Later in the month, from Oct. 17-19, the third annual Shop Hop sponsored by nine area quilt shops will rally quilt enthusiasts for another good cause. Participants who travel to each of the nine shops will become eligible to win luxury gift baskets worth more than $100. To get a passport that’ll be stamped at each shop, registration costs $5 and all proceeds benefit Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Research.
For Shop Hop information or to register, call the Gilbert Block Quilt Shop just across the street from the Major’s Inn in Gilbertsville at 783-2780.
