4-H Week kicks off Sunday
CHENANGO COUNTY – All of Chenango County’s 22 4-H clubs are looking forward to next week. Local club members, along with their counterparts in communities across the country, will be celebrating National 4-H Week from Oct. 5-11.
The week-long celebration kicks off Sunday with Chenango County’s 4-H Achievement Day. Both county and national awards will be presented during the annual event which will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the United Church of Christ in Norwich.
“4-H members and clubs will be recognized for their achievements throughout the year, their completion of another project record year, and top clubs and members will be awarded,” said Jessica Jaramillo, Cornell Cooperative Extension’s communications coordinator.
The awards presentation will be followed by a pot-luck dinner. Those who would like to participate are asked to bring a dish to pass.
Local clubs will also be participating in the Chenango County 4-H Window Display Contest. This year’s theme is “Choose Health, the 4-H way.”
“They were challenged to create a display promoting Chenango County 4-H and place it in a highly visible public area or window, such as a bank, town hall or library,” said Jaramillo.
The window decorations will remain on display all week and judging will take place during that time. The winning club will receive a pizza party.
Some local 4-H groups already have their entries in place, such as the Hidden Ponds Horse Lovers Club display at Norwich Glass.
Keith Severson, executive director of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County, said he is proud of the accomplishments of local 4-H participants. For him, the most satisfying part is “watching youngsters mature and grow and take on greater challenges.”
The rest of the nation might be satisfied with celebrating this program for a week, but not here in Chenango County. According to Jaramillo, the Chenango County Board of Supervisors is expected to adopt a resolution later this month to designate October as 4-H Month.
Chenango County 4-H started their fall membership drive on Oct. 1. For more information on the organization or to find a club in your area, contact 4-H Educator Katrina Ellis at 334-5841 x17 or via email at kle26@cornell.edu.
