Oxford puts the sting on Hornets
Football
Oxford 37, Harpursville 6
OXFORD – Oxford proved the point that “anything can happen on a football field.”
Winless through the first month of the season, the Blackhawks made a 180-degree turn with an implausible but completely satisfying blowout victory over Harpursville Friday night.
While everything the Blackhawks touched turned to gold, the Hornets bore little resemblance to a team that had over 400 yards of offense the past two weeks. A glimmering 3-1 mark entering Friday’s fray will need some new spit and polish. “Harpursville is a good football team,” said Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “We’ve been able to create turnovers in every game, and finally we were able to capitalize on the other team’s mistakes.”
Travis Frank, the designated workhorse for Oxford, had three TD runs and one TD pass finishing with 211 yards on the ground. His six-yard halfback option pass to Jeremy Nelson in the corner of the endzone upped the margin to 12-0 in the first quarter.
Harpursville lone glimmer of well-executed offense came on a 49-yard TD pass from Ryan Dalpiaz to Todd Terpstra cutting the lead to 12-6 in the second quarter.
Oxford and Frank answered that score later in the quarter on a one-yard plunge.
The Blackhawks poured in the fourth quarter tacking on three more touchdowns. Frank and Brandon Shaw picked up rushing TDs, and Alex Marin capped a big day for the Oxford defense returning a 37-yard interception for the final score. Marin and John Wonka each had two interceptions, and Frank had the fifth pick-off. Frank, coming off a 17-tackle game the previous contest, recorded 20 tackles to spearhead the defense.
Aside from the quintet of interceptions, Harpursville had eight fumbles – mostly on center snaps to the quarterback – to continually stunt offensive possessions. “Going into the game, we felt that if we played well, we had a good chance to win,” Chrystie said. “We never thought we would have an offensive explosion and double our points. We took away the way they like to attack defenses, and forced them to pass more than they wanted.”

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville celebrated homecoming weekend with a nice rebound victory after losing its playoff aspirations a week ago at Westmoreland.
“There was a lot of emotion, and we came out and played with much more intensity,” said S-E coach Mick James.
The Marauders (3-2) kept their goal of a winning season alive with a balanced offensive attack and a defensive performance that limited Clinton to 179 yards of total offense.
S-E scored on its third drive of the game when Logan Klockowski hit Phil Price on a five-yard fade pass. Price caught four balls for 103 yards from Klockowski including a 40-yarder that set up the initial score.
Clinging to a 7-6 lead entering the fourth, Nick Beadle capped a drive with a two-yard TD run, and Logan Aikins converted a 24-yard field to up the margin to 10 points.
S-E finished with 178 yards rushing an 125 passing, its most balanced offensive output of the season. “We made some personnel changes on offense and defense, and it paid off for us,” James said.
S-E plays at winless Canastota Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Greene 36, Canastota 16
CANASTOTA – Greene is off to its first 5-0 start in the coaching tenure of Tim Paske racking up a season-high 532 yards of total offense in Friday’s win at Canastota.
The Trojans moved the chains at will, and if not for nine costly penalties, three turnovers, and other untimely mistakes, may have hit the 70-point mark. Scott Gorton threw for 189 yards and three TDs, and Nate Whittaker added two TD passes. “Scoring on five TD passes and not having a rushing touchdown, that’s different for us,” said Greene coach Tim Paske. “We’ll take it.”
Trailing 3-0 in the first quarter after Canastota’s Shea Cerio kicked a 23-yard field goal, the passing surge began on Whittaker’s seven-yard TD toss to Dan Carlin.
Following one of its three turnovers, Nick Wilcox stuffed Canastota’s ballcarrier for a safety – the second safety in as many weeks for Greene – and Whittaker hauled in a 32-yard TD pass from Gorton to make it 16-3 at halftime.
Each team traded a pair of TDS in the third quarter. Brendan Kinne scored the first of his three TDs catching a four-yard toss from Gorton. Kinne had TD receptions of four and five yards, the last of which upped the lead to 20 points.
“Looking at film after the game, we did a lot of really good things,” Paske said. “We missed a few scoring opportunities, but we went on the road and got the job done.”
Garrett Hickey led a 282-yard rushing attack with 115 yards on 21 carries. Whittaker was one of five Trojans defenders to record an interception. Christian Passela, Josh Clink, Kevin Gilroy, and Gorton also had interceptions.
