Firefighters save North Norwich home
NORWICH – Fire investigators say a chimney is to blame for starting a North Norwich home fire that ignited early Saturday morning.
At about 5:20 a.m. Saturday, North Norwich fire crews responded to a 911 call reporting that the home of Richard and Janet Decker at 183 Brookins Road in the Town of North Norwich, was aflame.
Decker, chairman of the Chenango County Board of Supersivors, and his wife were not injured in the fire. Crews were able to save the single-family, wooden structure form the blaze, bringing it under control within 25 minutes after arriving on the scene.
Firefighters said they were successful in containing the damage “keeping smoke, heat and water damage to a minimum throughout the remaining part of the structure,” stated a media release.
The Chenango Cause and Origin Team determined the cause to be accidental. The source of the fire was ruled to be the result of the house structure being exposed to the constant heat from the chimney over a long period of time. The fire traveled up along the wall surrounding the chimney reaching the attic before being brought under control.
Sherburne and Norwich Fire Departments also responded to the scene.
The County Bureau of Fire recommends residents get their heating equipment and chimney cleaned and inspected at least once a year, particularly right before seasonal use, if possible.
