Legion rewards Sherburne band

SHERBURNE – The Sherburne/Earlville High School Marauders Marching Band, under the direction of Jeff Manwaring, participated early in July of this year at the New York State Department American Legion’s annual conference in Albany. Chenango County American Legion Commander Hank Burnor, Past County Commander Fred Baker and Judy Baker, County Auxiliary President, presented a $1,000 cash award and a certificate from the American Legion to the band.
“The high school band demonstrated to all pesent their spirit and Americanism,” Burnor said. “ They braved the 95 plus degree heat of the day and marched and performed in a parade down the streets of our State Capital.”
The Marauders earned first place in their category. Commander Burnor also stated that the Legion has many other youth programs that focus on education, drug awareness, child literacy, scouting, baseball and junior shooting sports. Currently they are running an Oratorical Competition for high school students to compete for college scholarships awards by demonstrating their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution in a public speaking format. Those interested should ask their school administrator about it or their local American Legion Post.
