OXFORD – Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton won its first Oxford Blackhawks tournament title since 1990 edging the Purple Tornado in the finals Saturday night.
All-tournament selection Cody Hall drew a foul in the penalty box, and converted a penalty kick just over 12 minutes into the second half for the winner. “I was happy with the way we kept up our intensity level and focus,” said G-MU coach Mark Luettger. “We showed the desire to win, whether we were down – like we were against Oxford Friday – or after Norwich had come back to tie us.”
The Raiders and Tornado entered halftime tied at one-all. Keegan Ryan scored for Norwich 90 seconds after G-MU’s first tally, his third goal of the tournament. Greg Talbot opened the scoring for G-MU, his first varsity goal of the season.
G-MU (10-5) advanced to the finals with a convincing 4-1 victory over the host Blackhawks.
Taylor Bates put Oxford on the board 1:18 into the first half, but after that it was all G-MU.
Hall scored in the first half to tie the game, and had two more goals at 13 and 20 minutes expired to push the Raiders in front.
Norwich, winless this season, made the most of its five shots on goal scoring three times in a 3-0 shutout of Greene.
Kyle Acenowr added the Tornado’s other goal, and Joe Krug made nine saves for his second shutout this season.
In the consolation game, Mark Day had a hat trick for Greene, who upended Oxford for the third time this season, 5-1.
