YMCA employee honored at award ceremony
NORWICH – The New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities celebrated a “Works for Me” recognition ceremony on Tuesday, and among those honored was Sherburne resident Ryan Scott.
An 18-year employee of the Norwich Family YMCA, Ryan was nominated for the statewide award by his job coach LuAnn Costley Shepard. Ryan started his employment at the Norwich Family YMCA on June 24, 1991 when former Facility Director Jerry Phelan, who was his immediate supervisor, hired him. He completed a two-year, volunteer work program at the YMCA through BOCES.
Phelan stated: “Ryan is an amazing worker who follows instructions well. Ryan’s personality is contagious, and (he) was pleasure to work with.”
Ryan, his family, representatives from the YMCA, and Ryan’s job coach traveled to Albany to be a part of the honorable mention for their professional working relationship over the past 18 years.
“Ryan Scott is considered to be the hardest, most dedicated worker at the YMCA. In his tenure he has only missed one day of work, and even then he had a doctors note. Ryan is the one constant at the Norwich Family YMCA. He is committed to his job, his schedule, and his passion for current events, music, and following sports,” OMRDD officials stated.
When asked why he likes working at the YMCA, Ryan said, “I like working at the YMCA because I get to help so many people. I also like being paged to the front desk because I feel important.
“Ryan’s dedication and work ethic every day to the YMCA should be a motivation to all that work and volunteer for this great community organization,” YMCA Facility Director Chuck Moore said.
Executive Director Jamey Mullen has worked at the Norwich Family YMCA since August 1992 and has known Ryan during his tenure.
“Ryan is always focused and concerned about others,” Mullen said. “It doesn’t matter how bad of a day you might be having, he is always there to put things into perspective and put a smile on your face. Ryan Scott is a true reflection of the YMCA and the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.”
