DELHI – Not knowing it was getting help elsewhere, the Trojans took charge of their own destiny, and that destiny was a first-ever league championship.
Leading second-place Sidney by half a game, Greene won its 12th straight game scoring the game’s final four goals to win on the road Tuesday.
The title comes after three runner-up finishes in the Midstate Athletic Conference.. “The girls were really excited to get to this game,” said Greene coach Randy Smith. “The first 10 to 15 minutes of this game, we were playing not to lose.”
Delhi grabbed the early advantage just nine minutes into play. The equalizing goal came from a new source on the Trojans’ side. Billie McBride scored her first varsity goal after getting a drop-back pass from April Small. Small netted the go-ahead tally with four minutes left in the half on a breakaway.
Leading scorer Megan McDermott had two unassisted goals in the second half to give her 32 on the season. “We finished the game the way we wanted,” Smith said. “The defense stepped up in the second half and did not allow a shot.”
Greene (14-3-1) led Sidney by half a game entering last night’s game. The Warriors were eliminated from playoff contention after a loss to Unadilla Valley.

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley picked up its biggest win of the season, and eliminated Sidney from MAC division title contention with a victory at home Tuesday.
Kara Collins scored the eventual game-winner off a cornerkick from Sakura Gysin at 10:28 of the second half to make it a 2-0 game.
Brittany Schunk scored for Sidney with just over 15 minutes to play, and the Warriors were denied on a penalty kick to tie the game with under eight minutes left. “Our keeper Emily Sugar did a nice job, and Leslie Barnes played a nice ball off the goal line,” said UV coach Chris Bieniek. “It was a fun game to watch.”
Gysin scored in the first half for UV getting a pass from Amanda Tumilowicz. UV finishes the regular season at 9-7-2 (7-5-2 league).

Oxford took leads of 1-0 and 2-1, getting goals from Kelli Whitehill and Amanda Brown. Brown’s tally came just over five minutes into the second half.
Lauren Porter scored her first goal of the season for B-G with 8:57 left in the game. Natasha Gould tallied the Bobcats’ opening goal, also her first goal. “We had a long losing streak, and I wasn’t sure if we remembered how to win,” said B-G coach George Williams, whose team last won in the finals of the Unadilla Valley Tournament. “This was a nice way to end the regular season.”

Leading by just one goal, Lindsay Hodges scored with 10 minutes left off a Sam Crandall pass, and Karli Harris caged her second goal of the game getting a feed from Jolene Mezza. “We capitalized on our good plays, but our defense struggled and gave up more shots than we should have,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “It wasn’t until the last 10 minutes that everything began to click.”
S-E (6-8-2) is at Ilion Friday and visits Mohawk Saturday.

Windsor keeper Kassie Kerrigan turned aside 22 shots, and kept her club in the game in the face of heavy Trojans pressure. Anna Crumb picked up an attempted defensive clear, and scored from the top of the penalty circle at 18:02 for the Trojans’ first goal. Andrea Day chipped in with an insurance goal in the final minute.
“She played a phenomenal first half and made a lot of great saves,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin of Kerrigan. “We were getting stuff off the goalie’s pads, but couldn’t get the putback we wanted.”
Greene (14-2) is idle until the Section IV playoffs later this month.

COPES CORNERS – Cody Hall created the scoring opportunity, and Alex Schmidt capitalized with the winning goal as G-MU finished the regular season with a win over Laurens Tuesday.
Coming off an Oxford Tournament title, the Raiders (11-5) avenged an early-season loss to the Leopards. Scoreless through regulation and most of the two overtime periods, Hall took a pass from the right wing and fired a shot from the right side to the left post that was barely knocked away. Schmidt ran onto the loose ball and tucked away the goal with just 49 seconds left in the game. “Their goalie did a great job to save the first shot by Cody,” said G-MU coach Mark Luettger. “Alex never gave up on the play and kicked it in. It was a big win for us against a good team. We wanted to step up our play against the better teams in our league.”
Andrew Delmar made 12 saves in goal for G-MU.

ONEONTA – Norwich sophomore Jacob Kelly shot an 82 at Oneonta Country Club in Tuesday’s STAC Championships to finish in middle of the field among 68 players Tuesday.
Norwich had two players entered based on tournament based on its finish in division play.
Union-Endicott captured the team title with a 398 total led by medalist Mike Wesko’s 1-under-par 70.
Eric Walling added a 96 for Norwich. Kelly will compete in the Section IV Medalist Tournament in May, 2009 at Cornell University Golf Club.

SHERBURNE – Cazenovia was able to create enough distance between it and S-E/Hamilton with a one-two finish in the 100-yard breaststroke to edge the host team in Tuesday’s meet.
Samantha Martin broke the S-E/Hamilton school record in the 200 individual medley (2:35.95), and added a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle (6:13.09).
The Marauders closed the gap in the 100 backstroke when, Eliza Nolen and Brigitte Capirci finished first and second respectively.
Kristina Reynolds added a win for S-E in the 100 butterfly. “Even though we won the last event (400 freestyle relay), the deficit was too large to recover,” said S-E coach Corey DuBois.

Michelle Testani had eight kills and four aces for Norwich. Abby Dean led with 11 assists and five aces. “We’ve shown aggressiveness in spurts, but tonight we showed aggressiveness and intensity all night,” said Norwich coach Paul Sims. “We didn’t back off, and it was nice to come back and beat them.”
It was the first win over the past three seasons for Norwich against a team other than Chenango Forks or Whitney Point. The Tornado host Maine-Endwell Thursday.
