Arts Council to exhibit Jason Papke Retrospective
NORWICH – The Chenango County Council of the Arts, Norwich, announces a gallery exhibit entitled The Life Works of Jason Papke. Jason, a Norwich High School graduate, majored in graphic design and marketing at Canandaigua Community College and Oneonta State University. He held numerous graphic arts positions, including Director of Art for Aspen Dental in Syracuse. Jason also worked in design for 3I in Binghamton, Sidney Frank Importers, San Diego and New York (where he helped design the Grey Goose Vodka Orange label), plus numerous other graphic shops in Albany, Ithaca, Norwich and Raleigh, NC.
He created and ran his own graphics and print shop called Ink Unlimited for 3 years in Raleigh before moving back to New York. The shop specialized in commercial sign development, vehicle advertising wraps, and commercial advertising.
As a professional artist, he worked in photography and “extreme” computer graphics.
Jason was also a very accomplished musician and many of his friends knew him for his music more than his art. He played bass guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin and had started developing his skills as a slide guitarist. He once had a band called Shady Miers and even cut an album in his college years. It was not uncommon to find him playing at open mic night in local Syracuse cafes in recent years.
He was also an avid soccer player and flourished as a goalie in high school and college. He created a men's soccer team in Raleigh called “Raleigh Rage” that still continues playing under that name.
Throughout his life, Jason had a need to create and express himself through his art. His love of family and friends continually inspired and challenged him until his untimely death in 2008.
Thirty four of Jason Papke’s works will be exhibited at the Council of the Arts from Oct. 17 through Nov. 13. An opening reception, free and open to the public, will be held on Friday, Oct. 17 from 5-7 p.m. The Life Works of Jason Papke is being sponsored by Michael and JoAnn McCormack and Bud and Vickie Papke.
The Chenango County Council of the Arts is located at 27 West Main Street, Norwich. For more information on this exhibit or other programs at the Council, call 336-ARTS (2787) or visit www.chenangoarts.org.
