Thieves abscond with library wishing well

OXFORD – Thieves who broke into the Oxford Memorial Library Wednesday night got very little for their troubles.
Bypassing expensive computer equipment, the thieves removed the ‘wishing well’ where donations are left for the library’s building project.
Library Director Nancy Wilcox, who notified police of the break-in, estimated that there was between $20-30 in the well at the time of the theft.
Wilcox said she noticed her office window was open while parking her car on Thursday morning. “I walked across the parking lot just far enough to ascertain that the screen had been cut,” said the library director. She then used another entrance to call police.
While she and library clerk Naomi Cronk waited outside for law enforcement officers to arrive, they noticed that the wishing well was missing.
While Wilcox said she was glad nothing else was missing from the library, she is disappointed to lose the donations toward the building project fund. “We need every dollar we can get,” the director explained.
“This is the third time the library has been broken into,” said Wilcox. According to the library director, the prior two break-ins happened about two years ago. The thieves made off with $6 from the library’s fine box on the second attempt.
Oxford Police Officer Ron Martin and Sheriff’s Deputy Debra Ives responded to the call.
“We’re still under investigation mode right now,” said Martin at the scene.
