Chenango’s unemployment sets eight-year high

BINGHAMTON – Following the nation’s economic downturn, Chenango County’s 6.5 percent unemployment rate jumped nearly one percent from August and set a monthly high not seen since 1995.
The unemployment rate was .6 percent higher in September and 2 percent higher for the year.
According to New York State Department of Labor figures released Thursday, a total of 1,000 jobs have been lost for the year so far, primarily in the professional and business services and personal services sectors. Fewer people called on temporary service agencies, for example, and personal services such as beauty salons, causing lay-offs.
New York’s other counties followed a similar trend that reflects the nation’s faltering economy, Senior Economist Christian Harris said.
“Chenango got hit a little harder than others, but is experiencing unemployment reflective of the national downturn,” he said.
Only five of the state’s 62 counties had higher unemployment rates. Of the five surrounding counties, Delaware and Cortland’s unemployment rate last month was 5.9 percent, Broome had 5.8 percent, Otsego had 5.5 percent, and Madison’ County’s rate was 5.4 percent.
Chenango County’s rate was also higher than both the nation’s, at 6 percent, and New York’s, at 5.6 percent.
