Greene drops playoff game in penalty-kick shootout

Delhi 0, Greene 0
GREENE – In the regular season, Saturday’s Class C playoff game would simply go down in the record books as a tie. But this is the playoffs, and there are no ties in the postseason.
Delhi, who dropped its two regular season meetings to Greene in the Midstate Athletic Conference by a combined 7-2 score, held off the Trojans’ offensive rushes in dreary, wet conditions for 100 minutes on Saturday, and prevailed in penalty-kick shootout, 3-1. Hilary Denison, Sienna Brown and Eva Rae Andrews had shootout goals for the Bulldogs, who advanced to the sectional semifinals with the win. “Their coach had his kids well prepared, and it was a great defensive effort on their part,” said Greene coach Randy Smith, who was gracious in defeat. “They didn’t play not to lose, but they did do their best to keep us from scoring.”
Megan McDermott, who had 33 goals on the season and scored twice in the most recent meeting, was heavily marked the entire game, and rarely saw any room to roam free. Greene junior Liz Wentlent nearly broke the tie in overtime hitting a hard shot that required a big-time save from Delhi keeper Libby Buel.
The Trojans finish 15-4-1, and were ranked as high as number eight in the state polls. They also had a team-record 13-game winning streak, one that ended with Saturday’s defeat.

SPENCER – Spencer-Van Ettn’s Tyler Bailey scored 3:48 into the second 10-minute overtime to give the Panthers a sectional win over the Trojans Friday.
Bailey scored after a ball got loose in the penalty box, and his hard shot was just off the fingertips of Trojans keeper Curtis Richards.
“They have an excellent offensive team with two guys who combined for 72 goals,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “Our defenders Eli Marks and Evan Moxley did an great job shutting them down. That’s a talented team, and they probably the most dangerous scoring team left in (Class C) sectionals.”
Greene (15-4-1) received its lone tally from freshman Alex Driscoll. The Trojans graduate only two starting seniors, Tallman said, giving him high hopes for net season.
