Oxford ends on a high note
NEW BERLIN – In a season filled with more lows than highs, Oxford coach Mike Chrystie told his players – particularly the seniors – that they will always remember winning their last game.
Thanks to a pair of big plays to snuff out UV-Edmeston’s burgeoning momentum and confidence, Oxford was one better on the extra-point conversions, and two better on the scoreboard taking a 22-20 win Thursday night.
Travis Frank rushed for 175 yards and two touchdowns, the latter score proving decisive. Frank took a pitch on a play designed around the right end. He cut back all the way across the field to the left sideline outracing the UV-E defense for a 68-yard score. The TD tied the game, and Frank broke the tie with a successful two-point conversion.
“They did push us around in the second half, and seeing them on film, I knew they would be a better team than their record,” said Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “They just didn’t finish in some games or a get a play when they needed to.”
Unadilla Valley-Edmeston made some of its own breaks early in the second half. Josh Thomsen recovered a fumble at the Oxford 16 after a bad handoff exchange.
Anthony Monk ran eight yards for a first down on a fourth-and-four, and two plays later, Eric Bennett scored on one-yard run making it a 12-8 game.
On the ensuing kickoff, Jeremy Nelson scooped up a low wobbling boot from Justin Peek, hit a seam and raced 80 yards for the go-ahead TD.
Later in the third, UV began a 55-yard TD march, one that was buoyed by Jay Lloyd’s 28-yard scamper and Anthony Monk’s first down run that set up a first-and-goal from the six. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Lloyd covered the last 18 feet putting the Storm in front. Tyler Foulds’ two-point run put the hosts in front again, 20-14.
Frank stamped out the UV-E momentum moments later. “Every score they had, we were able to bounce back and get a score ourselves,” Chrystie said. “Winning for the seniors was a huge goal this week. We weren’t going to worry about our record or who we were playing, we just wanted to send them off with a win.”
“We’ve been in the lead so few times this year,” said UV-E coach Jack Loeffler of Oxford’s big plays. “I don’t know if we got complacent for a moment or thought we had a lock on the game.”
Outside of Frank’s big day running the ball, UV-E limited the rest of the Blackhawks’ offense to 36 yards. “We’ve pushed teams around and dominated portions of games in several games this season,” Loeffler. “We’ve had trouble finishing in the red zone all season.”
Oxford opened the scoring with its only sustained drive of the game. Following Jamie Smolcnop’s interception and return to the 11-yard line, Oxford moved 89 yards on 14 plays using nearly 6 1/2 minute of possession time. Frank’s four-yard TD run and John Wonka’s two-point conversion pass to Jeremy Nelson made it 8-0
UV-E established its running game on the next sequence after Jon Lopez’s 37-yard kickoff return to the Oxford 44. Monk, Bennett, and Lloyd moved the chains, and quarterback Ryan Harrington kept his feet moving on a quarterback sneak, and scored from 10 yards out cutting the score to 8-6.
The loss left the Storm at 0-9, the second winless campaign for the program in four years. Oxford winds up 2-7 overall.
