Greene shakes off rust to win section title

Field Hockey

Greene 4, Whitney Point 1
CORTLAND – Greene shook off the rust in the first half, and was in prime-time form in the second half to win its third straight field hockey championship over Whitney Point, Saturday at Cortland.
The Trojans, coming off an 18-day layoff, matched goals with Point early in the game, but dominated throughout the 30-minute second half. “It was a big concern,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin of the time off. “We had done some scrimmaging last week with Afton and Maine-Endwell, and that helped. But it took a little of time to get going.”
Greene drew a penalty corner in the first four minutes, then immediately was awarded with a penalty stroke following heated action in front of the Whitney Point cage. Stephanie Stahl cashed in the stroke at 26:12.
Whitney Point took advantage of a Greene defensive breakdown to tie the contest at 20:05. McKay Ross sent a crossing pass in the penalty circle to Molly Hurd, who tied the game up.
Andrea Day unlocked the tie on a penalty corner after an Erin Smith pass later in the half, and Greene raised the bar over the final 30 minutes tacking on two more goals. Christine Conroe and Anna Crumb were credited with tallies.
The Trojans finished with 22 shots and 15 penalty corners, while the Golden Eagles had eight and four respectively.
“We had a great week of practice, and we were able to tweak some things,” Carlin said. “Those things started to come together, and we played really well in the second half. Our passing game was good and our midfield played great.”
Greene moves on to the state playoffs Saturday at 1 p.m. at Vestal when it faces Section III, Class A champion Liverpool.

B-G 24, Seton Catholic Central 0
BAINBRIDGE – B-G turned back two early Saints threats, and stopped a three-game losing streak to finish with a third straight winning season Friday.
The Bobcats failed on an onside kick to start the game giving Seton possession at midfield. After stopping that drive, the Bobcats fumbled a punt snap on the ensuing possession giving the Saints control of the ball at the 10. Again, the B-G defense thwarted the visiting club.
B-G (5-4) then marched 85 yards on 11 plays – all runs – ending on a three-yard TD run by Brad Hurlburt. Dustin Ross added a 65-yard TD run later in the first quarter when he cut across the field and outraced the SCC defense to the goal.
Ross, who finished with 136 yards rushing, added a 19-yard scoot in the second quarter. Ross went over 1,000 yards for the second straight season finishing with 1,011 on the season.
Defensively, the Bobcats limited SCC to just 25 passing yards, and the Saints’ vaunted passing attack was contained finishing with just 104 yards. “We were able to shut down the running game, and we did that with our front seven,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “That allowed us to mix our pass defense.”
B-G finished with 280 yards rushing as Hurlburt added 103 yards on the ground. “The last three weeks we haven’t done much offensively,” Mattingly said. “To the credit of our kids, they never got down and kept their heads up. They were fired up and ready to play for this game.”

Eddy finished the 3.1-mile course in 22:46, and Jasmine Huff was 72nd in 23:37.
Noah Huff set the pace for the Marauders’ boys timing an 18:31 to wind up 36th out of 145 boys. Dan Palmiter was next placing 60th in 19:28. “By the time the boys race, the course was pretty torn up with the mud, but they ran a great final race,” Geary said.
