Elderly man passes away less than two weeks after his release from jail
MORRIS – An elderly nursing home resident who was recently released from the County Jail following his arrest for public lewdness passed away this weekend.
Leonard C. Bentley, 85, died Sunday morning, Nov. 2, just under two weeks after his release from the Chenango County Correctional Facility Oct. 21, where he had been held for three weeks.
The incident began after Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin contacted police and filed a complaint against Bentley. He was then remanded on $1,000 bail for the charge of public lewdness.
The Department of Social Services, with aid from Sheriff Thomas J. Loughren, moved Bentley to a temporary residence at a nearby nursing home after local agencies were left scratching their heads on how to handle the 85-year-old suffering from dementia.
Calling hours will be held at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris from noon until service time at 1 p.m. Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to consider donations to American Diabetes Association, 1508 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13502 or Ronald McDonald House, 1027 East Genesee St., Syracuse, NY 13210 or Milford American Legion, Milford, NY 13807 in his memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
