Greene field hockey team looks to set the tone

GREENE – Saturday is a big day for Greene sports, and the field hockey team can set the tone for the Trojans when they play Section III’s Liverpool in the Class A quarterfinals at 1 p.m. at Dick Hoover Stadium in Vestal.
“I think it would be a great set-up if we can go to the boys’ (football) game on a high,” said Greene field hockey coach Sue Carlin. “A lot of fans are coming to our game first before going to the football game. It would be a great carry-over for the community.”
While the Trojans’ boys are seeking a first sectional title, the girls’ field hockey team is a perennial state tournament contender with a handful of state championships as well.
Greene (15-2) earned a bid to the big dance beating Whitney Point last weekend – the third straight year it beat the Golden Eagles for a championship.
As many titles as Greene has won, it never gets old. “Absolutely not,” Carlin said when asked if winning sectional titles have become old hat. “I think it’s the tradition of the program that motivates the players. It’s always been there and is instilled in the players.”
Liverpool may know of Greene’s field hockey tradition, but that will matter little once the ball is in play. The Warriors have just one loss on the season, a 3-2 defeat to Section IV Class C champion Marathon. Liverpool also has a 4-2 win over Maine-Endwell. Greene, meanwhile, split its two regular season meetings with Marathon and Maine-Endwell.
“They have two strong midfielders and their wings are very good and fast,” Carlin said in sizing up her opponent. “When you get to this point, every game is a must-win. If we want to get to the ultimate game, we’ve talked about taking this step (winning), and not looking beyond it.”
