Keator shatters two NHS school records

OWEGO – Norwich senior swimmer Savanna Keator didn’t just break two school records at Wednesday’s Section IV Class B preliminary meet, she shattered them.
Keator broke the 10-year-old record in the 200-yard freestyle, then broke the oldest record on the high school scoreboard toppling Happy Wonka’s 24-year-old record in the 100-yard freestyle.
Keator, who had never swam a sub-two-minute time in the 200 free, easily qualified first in the Class B event timing a 1:59.08. She is just eight-hundreths of a second off an automatic state-qualifying time.
Keator upped the ante in the 100. In her long swimming career, she had eclipsed the 55-second mark just two times. She shredded Wonka’s record time of 54.1 seconds clocking a 53.55. “The records that were up there were amazing,” said Norwich coach Amanda Downey, who said that Keator’s 100 time qualified her for the state meet later this month. “Savanna’s times are even crazier.”
Keator was not the only first-place finisher for Norwich as Makenzie Williams picked up the best overall time in the 100-yard breaststroke with a personal-best 1:11.54. Williams is about a second off of a state-qualifying time.
In all, Norwich recorded eight times that earned bids into the finals Saturday at Owego. Included in that group are Williams (500-yard freestyle, 3rd, 5:40.72); Brooke Ireland (100 backstroke, 5th, 1:08.17), Hayley Chwazik-Gee (100 breaststroke, 6th, 1:18.24), Ellie Sacks (100 free, 8th, 1:00.89), and the 200 medley relay team (5th, 2:05.35).
“I am hoping they have more in them,” Downey said. “It’s always a toss-up, and it depends how they hold their taper.”
Also at stake is a unbeaten season for Keator, who has not lost an individual event in 2008.
