Greene loses in overtime

CHITTENANGO - Ward Melville of Section 11 made the most of its scoring opportunities, and needed just 52 seconds in sudden-victory overtime to defeat Greene Friday, 2-1, in the New York State Class A field hockey semifinals at Chittenango High School.
The Patriots pushed the ball into the Greene zone at the outset of overtime, and drew a penalty corner. In extended play in the penalty circle, Callie Vitalo pushed the ball into the cage for the winner.
Greene (16-3), bidding for its second state title in six years, led 1-0 with just over 10 minutes left in the first half when all-tournament team selection Chrissy Conroe scored off an Andrea Day pass.
The Patriots knotted the score less than two minutes later on a perfectly executed penalty corner. Emily Rahner scored on a hard blast following a nice pass from Georgia Holland. Ward Melville finished with just three shots in the game, while Greene had 12 shots on goal.
