Pre-trial conference postponed in dog case

OXFORD – A pre-trial conference in the criminal proceedings against Steven W. Fong of Brooklyn has been postponed.
Assistant District Attorney Stephen Dunshee and Fong’s attorney, Scott Clippinger, were due to meet with Oxford Town Justice John Weidman Monday, but a scheduling conflict for Clippinger caused the conference to be put off.
Weidman said yesterday that the meeting will be rescheduled for later this month, but the new date has not yet been announced.
Based on a ruling by Weidman on Nov. 3, Clippinger has 45 days to file motions on behalf of his client. The prosecution will have 15 days to respond to those filings.
Fong has been charged with a total of 115 misdemeanors in relation to 76 Pomeranians and the remains of 38 additional dogs removed in October from property owned by the Brooklyn man in the Town of Oxford.
Each misdemeanor could carry a potential sentence of one year of imprisonment.
The Pomeranians and one pit bull, taken from Fong when he was arrested, were housed at the Chenango County SPCA after they were seized. Fong forfeited ownership of the animals when he failed to post a cash security bond in the amount of $65,465 with the Town of Oxford Court to cover the SPCA’s costs of caring for the dogs.
