Voices of Tabernacle spread holiday cheer
SHERBURNE – Classic Christmas carols can easily put everyone in the holiday mood, and this weekend the Voices of Tabernacle will be performing their annual winter concert, which will feature a number of Christmas Classics from composers around the world.
The Voices of Tabernacle, directed by Anita Humer, will present “Choral Classics” at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Episcopal Church of Epiphany on Classic Street in Sherburne.
Saturday’s concert will include 25 selections, including “The Christmas Song,” “We Three Kings,” “Jolly Old St. Nicholas,” “Silent Night,” “Away in a Manger” and many others. Pauline Nower, a former member of the chorus will return as a guest soloist. Nower will perform a solo during “The Christmas Song.” A second soloist, Meena Conant, will perform a soprano solo during “Wither’s Rocking Hymn.”
Along with the chorus, there will be performances by some of Humer’s piano students. In addition, several instrumentalists will join the performance; including Rosemary Jaytanie on the Piano, Cathy Bishop-Thielke and Matthew Aubeuf on percussion and Stephen Sabin on the cello. “Our two mallet percussionists add a great deal of color to the pieces,” Humer said. A member of the Syracuse Symphony, Darryl Pugh, will also perform with the group on the string bass.
“Some of the songs are old, a few others are traditional favorites known to everyone,” Humer said. “There will be a lot of variety.” The numbers chosen for this year’s concert come from areas around the world, including England, Israel, Spain, Austria, France, Italy and Germany.
The groups 28 choral members started rehearsing for the concert in September. The members are not only from Sherburne, but many of the surrounding towns, including Hamilton, Norwich, Madison, Oxford, Waterville and New Berlin.
Humer said the audience will enjoy the expertise and variety of the numbers and the festive and spirited nature of the concert. One of the highlights, she said will be the performance of “’Twas the night before Christmas.” Humer explained that the song is often sung by children at school concerts. “It will bring back memories from childhood,” she said.
The concert will conclude with the “Hallelujah Chorus from ‘The Messiah’” “The songs will include some traditional carols and some songs from classical composers. These are the classics of the classics,” Humer said.
Tickets will be sold at the door for $8 or $7 for seniors. “The project is made possible in part by funds from the Broome and Chenango County Decentralization Program and is sponsored by the Episcopal Church of Epiphany,” Humer said. “Come to the concert and enjoy the festival of music.”
