Fire in Norwich claims life and injures family

NORWICH – A 79-year-old man was killed Sunday afternoon and his wife and daughter injured after their mobile home burned in the Maple Grove Trailer Park in the Town of Norwich.
Donald K. Loomis, 79, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency crews, according to the New York State Police.
His wife, Ida M. Loomis, 80, and their daughter, Christine L. Loomis, 40, were also injured in the blaze and originally taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital. They were both later transferred to University Hospital in Syracuse for treatment of smoke inhalation and burns, said the news release.
The New York State Police and the Chenango County and New York State Fire Investigators are investigating the fatal fire that was reported at about 2:57 p.m. Sunday at 157 Bourbon Street.
After receiving the original call that three people were still inside the structure, the Norwich Fire Department had an engine on the scene in just over four minutes.
No other residences in Maple Grove were damaged. Troopers have sealed off the area and investigators were still on the scene Monday morning.
Officials have not released the cause of the fire or any additional information at this time.
