Turnovers plague Oxford in loss to Unatego

OXFORD – Oxford committed 27 turnovers, and shot less than 30 percent for the game as Unatego took command in the second half.
The Spartans’ halfcourt trap allowed it to erase a seven-point Oxford lead over the final 69 seconds of the first half. The Blackhawks turned it over on four straight possessions, and Kelly Cleaver answered with two buckets, Colleen O’Hara spotted up for a 15-footer at the foul line, and Harley Judd made one free throw with 2.2 seconds remaining to knot the contest at 12-12.
Unatego’s trapping press yielded more success in the latter stages of the third quarter. O’Hara banged home a pair of three balls, and the Spartans finished the quarter on an 11-1 to lead 26-20. “Turnovers were definitely an issue, but I was happy with how we played short-handed,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer, who was missing a starter in the second half due to illness. “Our defensive intensity was good, but they had some big baskets after turnovers.”
Haley Witchella had 14 points and 14 rebounds for Oxford, and Amanda Mathis snagged 11 rebounds.
Oxford plays Greene at 6 p.m. Friday in the first round of the Norwich Pennysaver Tournament.

JOHNSON CITY – Down 18-2 at the start of the game, Norwich outscored Johnson City in each of the final three periods, but “just ran out of time,” said Tornado head coach Krista Porter.
“We were pressing and committing some fouls, and they were missing some foul shots,” Porter said of the fourth quarter.”We were hoping to make a couple more threes in the fourth quarter, but could not get them to fall.”
Elisha Eddy had a career-high 25 points to lead Norwich, and is averaging 20 points a game through three contests this season. Boyan Cox added 13 points for the Tornado in her first action this season.
Stacy Fox scored 14 of her 26 points in the first half to give JC at 28-19 lead. The Wildcats controlled the defensive boards, and executed their fast break to build the early lead, Porter said.

Leading the Beavers by one at halftime, OV held a 36-12 edge over the final two quarters. “Brookfield played really well defensively and was patient on offense in the first half,” said Vikings coach Dave Loomis. “I don’t know if they ran out of steam and maybe we picked up our defense a whisker, but we were able to take charge in the second half.”
David Cerasani and Brad Wentworth had matching 20-point games to lead OV, and Justin Shapley bucketed 10 points.

Jordan Dilello used aggressive drives to the basket to finish with a game-high 22 points, and Ryan Carr added 18. The Raiders’ defense held Leopards sharp-shooter Aaron Laing to nine points. “We wanted to limit Laing, and we were able to do that,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. “I think we turned it up two or three notches competitively tonight, and we proved we could play with anyone in our league. We just had a few more turnovers in our halfcourt offense than I would like.”
Tyler Wildfeir led G-MU (1-3) with a season-high 19 points, Cody Hall added 13, and Chris Lanza scored 10.
