Goodwill Christmas light extravaganza continues on Warner Road
NORWICH – For the last five years, the Warner Road home of Richard Lindner and Dr. Karen Banks has been surrounded with tens of thousands of Christmas lights during the holiday season.
With over 38,000 lights programmed to music, drivers can tune their radios to 94.9 FM to hear a transmission coming from the couple’s basement that broadcasts in intervals of over 10 minutes, creating a moving lights display to holiday melodies. The show runs repeatedly from about 5 to 9:30 p.m. every day.
The lights draw spectators and traffic, but also support for a good cause. The Lindner family provides a large food basket at the end of their driveway and collects food for the Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
This marks the third year Lindner family has held the drive during their Christmas light extravaganza. Non-perishable canned goods can be deposited in the Thomas the Tank Engine Train. Last year, the Lindners were able to collect 2,800 pounds of food for the Emmanuel Episcopal Church Food Pantry.
Apart from the food drive, Richard and his family have taken an additional goodwill step this year and have invited Santa Claus to visit their light show on Dec. 19 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Each person who visits will get a free four by six printed photograph with Santa. The family will be accepting donations during Santa’s visit to benefit Holy Family School’s Parent Teacher Organization. The Lindners hope to raise money to purchase school supplies such as books and other items with the collection.
Richard says he gets his inspiration to decorate from his two children, 6-year-old daughter Tyler and 3-year-old son William. “The kids just love it and at this time of year, I feel like I’m just a big kid myself,” he said.
Lindner said this year’s show took at least 100 feet of metal re-bar, 500 plastic 10-inch stakes, 1,000 feet of ethernet cable and over 200 hours of work before it was finished.
