Norwich fire claims a second victim

NORWICH – A fire that took the life of a Norwich man Sunday claimed the life of his wife Thursday morning after she succumbed to her injuries.
Ida M. Loomis, 80, Norwich, passed away Thursday morning. She had been listed in critical condition at the University Hospital in Syracuse since Norwich firefighters carried her out of the family’s burning trailer at about 3 p.m. Sunday. Loomis lived with her husband and daughter in the Maple Grove Trailer Park, 157 Bourbon St., Norwich.
Crews were unable to retrieve Donald K. Loomis, 79, from the blaze and his body was later recovered in the wreckage.
Christine L. Loomis, 40, is still in the burn unit at the University Hospital in Syracuse. Her condition at the hospital was listed as serious Monday. Authorities say her status is not as serious as the other two victims.
Sgt. Elizabeth R. Wonka of the New York State Police said Friday that Christine was being treated for smoke inhalation and burns. “Her injuries have not been termed ‘life threatening,’ but they’re serious injuries,” she said.
Wonka said investigators had made progress in rooting out the cause of the fire and although they did not yet discern one, there was “no reason to suspect foul play.”
Norwich firefighters were on the scene of the fire within five minutes of being dispatched after a 911 caller said three people were trapped inside of the home.
“Firefighters entered the residence and rescued the other two victims,” said New York State Police Investigator Jason Bessett.
Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matthew L. Beckwith said Friday morning that investigators were waiting for lab results to return.
“We have a couple more interviews to do and we’re waiting for results to get back,” he said.
No one else was injured in the fire and no other Maple Grove property was damaged.
The Norwich Fire Department responded to the fire with mutual aid from Oxford firefighters and medical crews. Cooperstown Medical Transport also responded.
